What Is a TPI Golf Assessment and What Can It Tell You About Your Body?

If you are serious about improving your golf, it helps to understand what your body is physically capable of doing.

A TPI Golf Assessment looks at the movement and physical qualities that may influence how you perform on the course.

It does not teach your golf swing.

It helps identify how well your body can move, create force and control the positions your swing requires.

What Does TPI Mean?

TPI stands for the Titleist Performance Institute.

The TPI system is used around the world by golf coaches, fitness professionals and medical practitioners to assess the physical characteristics that can influence a golfer's movement and performance.

The aim is simple.

Understand the golfer first, then use that information to guide training.

What Happens During a TPI Golf Assessment?

At The Golf Performance Coach, the assessment combines three main areas.

TPI Movement Screen

The movement screen looks at areas such as:

  • Hip rotation

  • Trunk rotation

  • Shoulder mobility

  • Balance

  • Stability

  • Pelvis and torso control

  • Upper and lower body separation

The purpose is to understand what movement you currently have available and whether there are any obvious restrictions or differences between sides.

Strength Testing

Strength is an important part of golf performance.

Testing can look at lower body strength, upper body strength, single leg capacity, grip strength and general force production.

This gives us a clearer picture of where your current strength levels are and what may need developing.

Power Testing

Power is the ability to produce force quickly.

That matters in golf because clubhead speed is an explosive quality.

Depending on the golfer, testing may include rotational medicine ball throws, jump testing and other simple power measures.

These results give us useful numbers that can be reassessed later.

What Does the Assessment Tell You?\

The biggest value of the assessment is not the individual tests.

It is the overall picture they create.

Your results can help identify:

Where you move well

Where mobility may be limited

Where strength may need improving

Whether there are noticeable left to right differences

How well you currently produce power

Which areas should be prioritised in your training

That means your golf strength and conditioning programme can be based on actual information rather than guesswork.

How Is the Information Used for Training?

Once the assessment is complete, the results are used to build your individual training plan.

For one golfer, the priority may be improving strength.

For another, it may be mobility and control.

Someone else may already move well and be strong enough, but need to focus more on power and speed.

There is no reason for every golfer to follow the same workout.

Your assessment helps decide what you need.

Can the Results Help Your Golf Coach?

Yes.

Your Golf Performance Report can also be shared with your PGA professional or golf coach.

This can help them understand the physical capabilities you currently have available.

For example, if your coach wants you to achieve a position that requires more hip or trunk rotation, your assessment can help show whether you physically have that movement available.

It does not replace technical golf coaching.

It simply gives your golf coach more information about the golfer they are working with.

They work on the swing. We work on the body producing it.

What Do You Receive After the Assessment?

After your assessment, your results are brought together into a clear Golf Performance Report.

This highlights:

  • Your movement profile

  • Strength and power results

  • Any relevant differences between sides

  • Your main physical priorities

  • Recommendations for training

  • Baseline scores for future reassessment

The aim is to leave you with a clear understanding of where you are now and what you should work on next.
